Steam Inc

Our site has been used as a locomotive depot since the 1880s and Steam Inc formed in 1972. We are an incorporated society devoted to the restoration and maintenance of a large collection of heritage steam and diesel locomotives together with a fleet of carriages that we regularly operate on the main line.

As the name implies, the main focus is on steam motive power, and it is usual for Steam Incorporated to have at least two of its steam locomotives in full operational condition. However, Steam Incorporated also owns and operates heritage diesel locomotives, both on the main line and for shunting duties around the depot at Paekākāriki.

The Society prides itself on its ability to accurately re-create complete trains as they used to run in the 1920s to 1960s, through the operation of its vintage wooden and steel-bodied carriages. Steam Incorporated main line rail tours are regularly advertised to the public, and provide the opportunity for young and old alike to experience the magic of steam travel to a variety of events and venues around the country.

Revenue gained from excursions and depot operations is re-invested in the Society to continue the restoration and maintenance effort.

We also offer day excursions from Paekākāriki plus more comprehensive tours to Whangarei in the north and Bluff in the south. Visit our website for more info.

Volunteering is a great way to use a skill you already have or gain a new one. At Steam Incorporated we are always looking for rail enthusiasts to volunteer to help in the various roles we have. From Depot maintenance such as track work, landscaping and building restoration to work on our locomotives and rolling stock such as engineering, carriage building, cleaning and electrical work.

Steam Incorporated also requires volunteers on our excursions for roles such as locomotive servicing crew, excursion management, hospitality and customer service.

Our Depot is usually open from Monday to Saturday. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information on volunteer positions with us, please contact one of our volunteer liaison officers listed below or email [email protected]
