Paekākāriki Playcentre is swapping mud-pies for real ones as it returns to its fundraising roots with a pie baking competition. Passionate pie lovers are invited to bake for and eat pies at the event at St Peter’s Hall on October 16th.
While researching the early education centre’s history for her studies, mum Hannah Rogers came across the centre’s legendary pie competitions of the 1960s.
Paekākāriki Playcentre has seen generations of mums, dads and other carers come together to share their parenting journey since first setting up in the village in 1954 and moving into the beautiful old villa on Wellington Road in 1977.
Playcentres are run as whānau cooperatives with families working together to provide care and education. “I’ve made so many friends at Playcentre and so have my children”, Hannah says. The centre aims to create a village for children and their whānau. “Seeing other parents struggle with the same things and watching them navigate tricky situations with their tamariki is so incredibly helpful,” she adds.
In need of a fundraiser to make sure that the Centre can continue to offer their three weekly sessions, including their bilingual Friday when children and whānau practise te reo Māori together, the idea for The Pie-tastic Pie Show of Paekākāriki was born.
“No matter if they’re savoury or sweet, gluten-free, vegan or ‘full of everything’, all pies are welcome to be entered,” the pie show committee assures. The pies will be judged by a knowledgeable panel comprising: Louis Sergeant, widely recognised as one of New Zealand’s best pastry chefs; Kāpiti pie baker extraordinaire Siggy Woolloff, of Waikanae’s Siggy’s Pies fame; and Paekākāriki kids’ cooking coaches, Fiona Walker and Jess Walker-Hale.
Pies needed!
To be a roaring success the competition needs entries from aspiring pie bakers from the community. If the glory of being crowned winner of the first Pie-tastic Pie Show of Paekākāriki isn’t enough motivation, there are some great prizes to be won. Baker can enter as many pies as they like. There is also a special junior category where kids 12 years and under can take part in the competition.
Entering is easy. Just send a blank email to [email protected] and an entry form will be delivered to your inbox.
