June 14: “My Favourite Cake” (Iran, NZIFF 2024)
Iran has been at the centre of the world’s concerns, and this delightful, bittersweet comedy-drama about a seventy-year-old widow’s quest for romance offers accessible insight into Iranian culture both before and after the revolution. We are also preceding its screening with the short film “Women Rising” by Pōneke based film-maker, Sahar Fanian. There will be cake! And a cuppa – bring a few extra coins – all proceeds to the upkeep of the hall.
June 21: Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk (Palestine, NZIFF 2025)
Another film about a heroic and inspiring woman, this is an incredibly moving portrait of life in Gaza during the Israeli military campaign, centred on courageous Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Among the myriad crises that have since happened around the world, the voice of Palestine is still one that must be heard and not forgotten. There will be a stall with edible and non-edible items available (Proceeds to local Paekakariki for Palestine group)
June 28: Thelma and Louise (USA, 1991)
An enduring classic and landmark film that stands as one of the best films of the nineties, it’s a fierce feminist celebration packaged into a wildly entertaining road movie starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon. (M Violence & offensive language)
Hot chilli. cornbread, hash browns etc – all proceeds to the upkeep of the hall.
