The Māori Ward is new. It was established by our Council, after much consultation, back in 2023, a decision it confirmed in 2024. That’s why those on the Māori roll will be electing a councillor this time around.

Those on the general roll get to vote for their own choice of District Wide Councillors for which there are two vacancies. Nobody gets to vote for both. Nobody gets more votes than anybody else in this regard.

The only people that get to vote more than once in local elections are those that are ratepayers in the District but that live outside it. For instance, an Auckland landlord that also lives and pay rates in Auckland would be able to vote in Auckland and in Kapiti. Two votes for landlords in this case.

Also at this election everybody will is able to vote in a referendum on whether or not to retain a Māori Ward. Despite our own leaders deciding to establishment it, the new government is overriding that and has passed a law forcing a referendum to decide if Māori can have a single elected representative around the Council table. Everybody gets to vote yes or no to that in the Māori Wards referendum.
