Kid’s Corner: Paekākāriki Swimming Sports!

Last month at Paekākāriki School we did swimming sports at Waikanae  Pools. The races included breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke.

At the end of each race, you would be given a coloured rod that equalled the amount of points that you had earned  for your house group.  The final race was a relay race, which required a child from each year group to represent their house.

The weather was beautiful, a hot, sunny day.

At the end there was a free swim but to join in you needed to have participated in at least one race.

Beach education

Beach education day also took place last month. Lifeguards from Paekākāriki Surf Club came to the school and talked to the students about rip safety awareness and sun protection.

Students were asked to draw a stick figure and then draw on it what they would need to stay safe in the sun.

Soon after the classroom work the children went outside to play games. These were to help students learn what they would do as a lifeguard to save someone on the beach.

Later the school walked down to the beach to swim in the water.

First, there was a race where the students had to get into lines and face the ocean. They had to run into the water and give their teacher a high five before running back to their team for another student to have a turn. Whichever team finished first, won.

After that there was a free swim!
