Paragliding and hang gliding Paekākāriki style

Members of the Wellington Hang Gliding & Paragliding Club have been flying the escarpment between the village and Pukerua Bay since 1973.  Solomon Amery Zwartz and Sven Ericksen take us flying.

“The steep, towering escarpment that cuts off Paekākāriki to the south,” writes Solomon “has been attracting free flight pilots since the early days of hang gliding in Aotearoa.

“The sea breeze hitting the hillside creates an ideal soaring ground for the region’s flying enthusiasts as well as visiting pilots, colouring our skies with their bright wings whenever the wind swings to the northwest. The Wellington Hang Gliding Paragliding Club is a hardy branch of the growing New Zealand community.”
