Paekākāriki Orchards and Garden Group help look after a strip of land at the northern edge of the village, named Miriona Gardens after the original owner.
We welcome you to join us in making Paekākāriki a place of abundant organic food production.
Our monthly garden sessions are a chance to learn what’s happening in the seasons, as well as sample some legendary baking and take home some produce, seeds or seedlings from the swap/sharing table. We also host seasonal/occasional celebrations and workshops (see local facebook pages or the paekākāriki.nz calendar for details.) All ages and stages are welcome.
Feel free to take a wander through this expansive site, open to everyone, from the productive gardens and Paecycle composting by Tilley Rd sportsfield, through an orchard and citrus grove to the Kemi and Niko hut. If working bees aren’t your thing, you could become a fruit tree guardian caring for a tree in your own time.
Contact us on [email protected] if you want to know more.
We harvest and cook community dinners too!
Nature Playground
As part of KCDC’s 2018 No8Wire week the site was transformed into a nature playground for two days, welcoming hundreds of visitors in creative exploration.
The site is also now home to an urban hut by Kemi Niko & Co as part of the 2020 NZ Festival of the Arts. The public are encouraged to add to the cladding.

Paecycle
Paecycle is a local service that collects household food scraps and turns them into compost for the community garden.
Benefits
Food scraps are a precious resource we use to grow more food.
Currently, 28 percent of Kāpi ‘s kerbside rubbish collected is kitchen scraps. When added to landfill, these resources generate leachate and methane that contribute to environmental pollution and climate change.
Recycling your food scraps may also allow you to rent a smaller rubbish bin each month!
Who we are
We are part of Paekākāriki Orchard and Gardens, Paekākāriki’s community garden group.
Our aim
We grow and provide nutritious organic fruit and veges for our community.
How it works
We supply a bin and run pickups on Tuesdays. There’s a $25 set up fee after which we suggest a monthly koha.
We’re modeling our composting operation on Newtown’s successful Kai Cycle scheme – check it out.
